Writing your CV

This is the chance for you to sell yourself on paper and convince the reader that you are worth interviewing.

The Do's:

  • Provide a summary of educational and qualification details, including grades and dates.
  • Detail your career history starting with your most recent position.
  • For each employment position, use bullet points rather than paragraphs.
  • Make sure your CV clearly indicates the progress you have made: listing achievements and successes.
  • Use good quality white paper with a plain type face, avoiding italics and decorative fonts.
  • Attach a covering letter, explaining why you are suited to the job.
  • Check and double-check for spelling and grammatical errors. (Get a second opinion.)
  • Where appropriate, tailor the CV to the position you are applying for.
  • Do ensure all information provided on the CV is factual and accurate.
  • Leave your hobbies and interests until last, and keep this section brief.

The Don'ts:

  • Do not waffle, you must keep the detail interesting and easy to read.
  • Do not use more than 3 pages.
  • Do not forget to include your contact details i.e. email address, home and mobile numbers.
  • Do not leave any career gaps unexplained.
